Support DJ Flight to replace Mary Anne Hobbs
Mary Anne Hobbs, the broadcaster and DJ, and a notable early champion of Dubstep, recently announced that she would be leaving her show on BBC Radio 1 on the 8th/9th September 2010.
The best candidate to replace her is DJ Flight. Although emerging in the Drum n Bass scene, Flight’s interests span a variety of musical genres; her DJ sets incorporate an array of deep electronic music. When Flight’s previous show on BBC Radio 1Xtra was cancelled – despite relatively high audience figures and much critical acclaim – to make way for more mainstream content, there was a strong outcry from DJs and music fans across the globe.
Much like Mary Anne Hobbs, she has always been, and remains, a strong supporter of emerging new producers and DJs. Her broadcasting style is knowledgeable but not preachy; it is relaxed but strongly charismatic. She plays fine music without prejudice. She has the ability to combine accessible tracks with more edgy content. She is precisely the kind of DJ a public service broadcaster should have in its fold.
Let’s ask the BBC to bring DJ Flight to Radio 1, to continue Mary Anne Hobbs’ traditions, and – as both would want – to push the show forward to find the future sound of electronic music.
